A security alert in Londonderry has ended following the discovery of a pipe bomb.

The Eastway area of the city was closed after reports of a suspicious object just after 09:00 BST.

A number of residents were evacuated and army bomb officers carried out a controlled explosion on the pipe bomb.

The road has now been reopened and residents have been allowed back into their homes.

Police are appealing for information.
