A fire close to a block of flats in Londonderry is being treated as arson.

An oil tank was set on fire in Carnhill Estate and the blaze was reported to police at 06:35 BST.

A number of residents, including several elderly people, were moved from their homes by police as firefighters brought it under control.

District commander Barry McDowell, from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, said the quick actions of his crews prevented the loss of life.

Police have appealed for witnesses.
