Limavady one punch attack man faces jail

Derry court Mark Deehan appeared in court in Londonderry.

An 18-year-old Limavady man who admitted a single punch attack that resulted in his victim sustaining an orbital fracture of his left eye socket, has been told he is going to jail.

Mark Harry Deehan, from Glenview Drive in Limavady, pleaded guilty to what judge Philip Babington described as a very serious stranger attack.

The attack took place in Linenhall Street on 18 March last year.

Deehan punched his 21-year-old victim in the face in an unprovoked attack.

The victim was knocked unconscious by the blow and fell heavily face first against shop shutters.

He later underwent surgery that included having a metal plate inserted around his eye socket and several operations to straighten his broken nose.

The attack was witnessed by police officers who gave first aid to the victim.

When he was arrested Deehan told the police he punched first because he believed his victim was squaring up to him.

Judge Babington adjourned sentencing until Wednesday and told Deehan to expect a custodial sentence.
