Londonderry man appears in court after explosives find

A 31-year-old man arrested following the discovery of explosives in a flat in Maureen Avenue in Londonderry last year has appeared in court.

Antony Thomas Friel from Gartan Square in the Bogside is charged with possessing pipe bombs, timer units and timer circuit boards with intent to endanger life.

He is also charged with possessing articles for use in terrorism.

These include a rotary tool kit, drill bits, a heat gun, berets and gloves.

The defendant is alleged to have committed the offences on May 21.

A prosecution solicitor submitted that the defendant had a prima facie case to answer.

There were no contrary submissions from the defendant's solicitor and the defendant was returned in custody for his arraignment at Belfast Crown Court on a date to be fixed.
