Derry Councillor wants reassurance on rural police cover

A Londonderry councillor has asked for reassurances that rural policing levels will not be affected by next year's City of Culture celebrations.

The SDLP's Thomas Conway who chairs the local Policing and Community Safety Partnership, said there has been a rise in anti-social behaviour rural areas.

Councillor Conway fears existing police cover in the area will be reduced to cope with 2013.

He said it is vital rural areas don't lose out.

"We are expecting a massive increase in visitors to the city which will need policing and resources.

"What we have asked the PSNI for is increased resources to help us deal with that.

"It is very important the neighbourhood policing teams are left to do their job and are not resourced into the city to deal with these major events.

"It is natural that we ask for these resources and natural that those resources will be provided."
