Limavady fire station blaze investigation begins

An investigation has begun into the cause of a blaze at a part-time County Londonderry fire station.

A Fire Service spokesman said a local firefighter had been alerted to the fire at Limavady fire station on Catherine Street by a smoke alarm at about 08:50 BST on Wednesday.

The blaze had taken hold of a store room and was brought under control about an hour later.

Firefighters from Dungiven and Londonderry were called to the scene.

The spokesman said: "There has been some damage to the lecture room in the fire station.

"However, the two Limavady fire appliances have not been damaged and the station remains operationally live," he said.

"We want to use this incident to emphasise that fire can happen to anyone, at anytime, in any building.

"Fire doesn't discriminate and it shows the importance of thinking fire safety first, working smoke alarms and the swift actions of our local fire crews in protecting our whole community from the dangers of fire."

Emergency cover in the area was not affected by the incident.
