Vandals 'making life a nightmare' for Strabane residents

Some families who live in a Strabane housing estate have described life as a "nightmare" because of anti-social behaviour in the area.

Residents in Melvin Court said the problem is caused by young people who gather at weekends near a disabled ramp at the town's river.

At least 50 people damaged cars and property outside their homes on Friday night, according to some residents.

One woman said her family would move out because of the trouble.

"I can't live like this for the sake of my children; if I had to move out I would."

Sergeant Glen Warnock from the PSNI's neighbourhood policing team said extra police patrols have been deployed.

"Anti-social behaviour is more than a police problem, it is a community issue," he said.

"I'm aware of a group of young people who are causing a problem in the Ballycolman Estate and the wider area.

"There's a hardcore who are causing damage and intent on making the lives of residents a misery."

Sergeant Warnock also urged residents who have experienced problems to contact the police.

"We can get a quick response and prevent some of this crime from happening," he said.
