About 50 firefighters have been involved in dealing with an overnight fire at a retail park in Larne, County Antrim.

The blaze began at a bingo hall in Laharna Retail Park on the Circular Road.

A member of the public reported the fire just before 04:00 BST on Sunday.

Eight pumping appliances and a fire command unit have been used in the operation.

John Bacon, of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, said there had been a fear that the fire would spread to adjoining buildings.

"It had the potential to be a big fire, literally it didn't get to develop," he said.

"That's largely down to the actions of the initial crews in attendance, who made a heightened and sustained attack on the fire and prevented it from travelling too far into the fabric of the building."
