Portadown man to stand trial over £1.49 theft

A man accused of stealing a soft drink worth £1.49 will have his case heard at a full jury trial.

David Armstrong, 19, of Mahon Road, Portadown, is alleged to have stolen the drink from a Dungannon supermarket on 8 April, 2013.

Appearing at Dungannon Magistrates Court, Mr Armstrong asked for the case to be heard at a "higher court".

The case has been adjourned until 28 May, when a date for committal to crown court will be identified.

Mr Armstrong was exercising his right to have the facts decided by a jury at trial rather than by a district judge sitting alone at a magistrates court.
