Police have begun a murder inquiry following the death of a woman in County Tyrone.

Mairead McCallion, 36, who was from the Omagh area, was found with head injuries at a house in Castleview Court in the town on Sunday morning.

She died in hospital a day later.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday that a murder investigation had begun. He appealed for anyone with information to contact detectives at a special incident room in Omagh Police Station.

SDLP councillor Josephine Deehan said she knew Ms McCallion and said she was well liked.

"We are greatly shocked and saddened to hear of Mairead's untimely death. She was a highly intelligent, warm, gentle girl. She was well known in the area."
