A 23-year-old man has been seriously injured after being assaulted in Newcastle, County Down.

It happened outside a bar in Main Street in the early hours of Sunday.

He was taken to hospital with a head injury which was described as serious, and a broken collarbone, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 22-year-old woman who was arrested at the scene has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
