A two-year-old girl shouted "bad daddy" after her father shot her aunt dead and badly injured her mother in County Londonderry, a court has heard.

Phelim McNally shot dead 18-year-old Lauren O'Neill in Bellaghy in May 2012.

She was trying to protect her sister Brenda, McNally's former partner and the mother of their two young children.

McNally, 27, from Station Park in Toomebridge, will be sentenced next week.

He admitted charges of murder and attempted murder as his trial was about to begin last month.

A defence barrister told the court on Friday he accepted it was "an appalling act", carried out "when the red mist had descended".

McNally's 10-month-old toddler, who was also in the kitchen at the time of the shooting, was found in a pool of blood shortly after the shooting.
