A security alert in Newcastle, County Down, has been declared a hoax.

Army technical officers carried out a controlled explosion on a suspicious object that was found close to the Shimna Road and Bryansford Road.

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said she was "deeply concerned" that the object had been found close to an Orange hall.

"Orangemen are entitled to enjoy their premises as anyone else should be and unjustifiable threats of this nature are totally wrong," the SDLP MP said.

The alert caused significant disruption in the town on Wednesday evening, as traffic travelling from the Kilkeel direction was unable to travel through Newcastle.
