Video: Severely disabled teenager told she 'must prove disability'

2 August 2013 Last updated at 19:30 BST

The parents of a teenager who has been severely disabled since birth say their daughter has been asked to prove that she is not fit for work.

Jessica Madden, 19, finished her education at Glenveagh Special School in south Belfast in June, but must serve a 13 week probationary period before she is given access to full, adult disability benefits.

The Department of Social Development said it cannot comment on individual cases but added Social Security staff would contact the family again to offer support and advice.
