A small aircraft has crash landed on Dairy Hall playing fields in Newtownards, County Down.

Police say the aircraft landed at some point before 17:00 BST on Thursday.

"The passenger and the pilot appear to be fine and there's no serious injuries," a police spokesperson said.

John Hughes, chairman of the Ulster Flying Club, said the aircraft was flying in over Newtownards on a runway approach when it experienced engine failure.

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the aircraft came down near Ards Airfield and that the two people who were on board walked from the plane.

The pilot and passenger were taken to hospital. The pilot is reportedly being treated for shock and the passenger suffered a sprained wrist.
