Two men who died in Kilrea car crash named locally
The two men who died following a car crash near Kilrea in County Londonderry, have been named locally as Declan McKenna and Christopher O'Neill.
Both were in their early 20s and from Kilrea.
Police were alerted shortly after 03:30 BST on Saturday after receiving a report of a blue BMW car on fire in the Agivey Road area.
Local SDLP councillor Roisin Loftus said people in the town were finding it hard to take in the tragedy.
"The mood in the town is just one of total shock at what has unfolded here today," she said.
"They're two very popular young men in their early 20s, very popular within the local area, they had many friends in the area and the young people are just totally numbed by this."
Police are still investigating how the crash happened.
Officers were taken up in a helicopter to survey the scene.
Christopher O'Neill was the chair of the Sinn Fein branch in Kilrea.
His grandfather John Davey was a Sinn Fein councillor who was murdered by loyalists in 1989.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness expressed his sympathy to Mr O'Neill's family and to Mr McKenna's.
