Former bar in Carrickfergus is destroyed in blaze

A former bar has been destroyed in a fire in Carrickfergus, County Antrim.

A number of homes were evacuated as the fire service dealt with the blaze at North Street in the town.

It is not yet clear how the fire started at the former Northgate pub.

Assistant Group Commander David Heyburn said crews managed to stop the fire spreading to an adjoining shopping centre.

"The initial efforts were to prevent the fire spreading into the De Courcy centre and the crews worked very hard to achieve that," he said.

"There has been practically no damage at all to the De Courcy centre and that's a great success."
