John Holmes charged with murder of Stanley McAuley in east Belfast

A 32-year-old man has appeared at Belfast magistrates court charged with murdering Stanley McAuley in east Belfast at the weekend.

Mr McAuley, who was 41, died after he was attacked in an alleyway at Chamberlain Street during the early hours of Sunday.

John Edward Hugh Holmes from Edith Street in Belfast appeared in the dock with his right arm in a plaster cast.

He was remanded in custody and is due in court again on 1 May.

His defence lawyer told the judge that he had handed himself in to police and had co-operated fully with the investigation.

A 20-year-old woman also arrested in connection to the murder remains in custody.
