Police investigate 'blast' on M5 motorway

Security alert on M5 The security alert is on a section of the M5 motorway

The M5 motorway from Greencastle to Hazelbank roundabout is closed in both directions due to a security alert.

Police have said they are investigating a report of a blast in close proximity to police officers in the Hazelbank area at 21:15 GMT on Saturday.

They are carrying out further searches on Sunday. No-one was hurt in Saturday's incident.

It is expected the M5 between Hazelbank and Greencastle will be closed for some considerable time.

Police helicopters are involved in the search operation which is focused on the southern side of the M5 motorway near Belfast Lough.

On Saturday, Glenmachan Street in Belfast and surrounding streets were closed while Army bomb experts dealt with a suspicious object.

A controlled explosion was carried out and it was declared a hoax.

There were traffic problems on the Westlink for several hours as the Broadway off-slips were closed in both directions.
