Waves cause flooding in Newcastle, County Down

The Kilkeel road in Newcastle, County Down, was closed for several hours on Friday because of flooding.

The south promenade in the seaside town was also flooded.

Heavy rain and water from breaking waves did not clear through the drains, police said.

"I couldn't believe the size of the waves coming over the wall," said Mrs Pat Preston, a Newcastle resident. "The waves crashing over the wall look very spectacular but also quite dangerous."

"I saw a lorry make it through but there was no way I could drive through," she added.

The road re-opened later on Friday.
