Loyalists and police clash after Belfast flag protest

Help

Clashes have broken out in east Belfast, following a loyalist protest outside Belfast City Hall over a decision to stop flying the union flag every day.

Up to 2,000 people took part in a peaceful protest earlier on Saturday. Afterwards trouble broke out on the Newtownards Road between loyalists and police.

It is understood that one officer was taken to hospital after being injured in the clashes.

The BBC's James Cook says senior PSNI officers believe loyalist paramilitaries organised some of the recent violence.
