Jordan Nike McAteer sentenced for glass attack on woman

A man who threw a glass in a woman's face in an unprovoked assault has been handed an 18-month custodial sentence.

Jordan Nike McAteer from Nendrum Gardens, Newtownabbey, was drinking in the Crusaders Football Club bar when the incident happened on 9 April last year.

McAteer, 19, appeared in the dock in an Adidas tracksuit.

The court heard he first threw his beer over the woman and then threw the glass into her face, leaving her with a cut.

Prosecuting lawyer Philip Henry told the court that a drunken McAteer also assaulted two other people and revealed that he was currently in custody serving a sentence for robbery.

McAteer's solicitor said the teenager was progressing well within a young offenders centre and had undertaken various courses.

Judge Gordon Kerr said McAteer had pleaded guilty to three violent offences, "none of which you can explain satisfactorily".

He rejected a plea from McAteer's solicitor not to interfere with the 19-year-old's release date in March.

Mr Kerr said he could not agree to that as "each piece of offending should be punished".

He ordered that McAteer spend six months in custody and the rest on licence.
