Prisoner found dead in Maghaberry jail

An investigation is under way into the death of a prisoner at Maghaberry Jail in County Antrim.

Patrick Farren, 58, was found collapsed in his cell in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at 03:44hrs.

The PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have been notified and investigations are ongoing.

The family has also been informed.

Prison Service Director General Sue McAllister said: "I would extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of Mr Farren.

"This is a tragedy and my thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
