Newtownbutler: man killed in house fire

A man has died in a house fire in County Fermanagh.

It is understood he was in his mid-50s and lived alone. Fire crews were called to the fire at a cottage at Clones Road in the Kilroot area of Newtownbutler shortly before 07:00 BST on Sunday.

When they arrived, the roof of the house had partially collapsed. The cottage was extensively damaged in the blaze.

A police spokesman said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott said people living in the area were shocked.

"They are a very close-knit community in Newtownbutler," he said.

"There will be people who will be grieving, particularly family members and our thoughts are with them. We have had a number of tragedies in recent weeks.

"This is a further one. People are almost in a daze."
