A 52-year-old man has appeared in court charged with having guns and ammunition.

Paul McDaid, of Sheridan Street, Belfast, was arrested after police stopped and searched a car on the A1 near Hillsborough on Monday evening.

He allegedly had two handguns and 14 rounds of ammunition in the vehicle. Police linked the search to dissident republican activity.

The accused spoke only to confirm his name during the hearing in Craigavon.

He gave no reaction as the charges were read out nor as a detective constable said he could connect him to the charges, but he did give a thumbs up to a small group of supporters in the courtroom.

There was no application for bail and the accused will appear again at Lisburn court via video link next month.
