Driver denies causing cyclist Michael Caulfield's death

A lorry driver has denied causing the death of a cyclist by careless driving.

James Jeffers Thompson, from Rose Park, Tandragee, who turns 51 years old on Saturday, pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Michael Caulfield.

The 56-year-old father of four, from the Saintfield area of Belfast, died when his bicycle was in a collision with a lorry driven by Mr Thompson.

It happened at the junction of the Ormeau Road and Annadale Embankment on 15 April 2011.

A so-called 'ghost bike' memorial has since appeared near the site of the accident.

On Friday at Belfast Crown Court, lawyers for both the prosecution and defence said there were a few issues to be dealt with before any trial could take place.

The Recorder of Belfast Judge Tom Burgess said there had been a potential trial date in December but that it would more likely take place next Easter.

Mr Thompson was released on continuing bail until a date to be fixed.
