There has been disappointment at the Olympic Games for County Down swimmers Melanie Nocher and Sycerika McMahon.

They are both representing Team Ireland but they failed to make it past their qualifying heats on Sunday.

Melanie Nocher, from Holywood in County Down, came third in her heat of the 100m back stroke but missed out on a place in the semi-finals.

Sycerika McMahon, 17, from Portaferry, also missed out. She finished eighth in the 100m breast stroke.

Her time was 1.08.80, more than half a second off the time she swam to qualify for the games.

It was a disappointing performance for the teenager who won her first major senior medal in May, setting a new Irish record in the 50m breast stroke and taking silver at the 2012 European Championships.

Melanie was over two seconds short of the qualifying time in London.

The 24 year old will now concentrate on preparing for her strongest event, the 200m back stroke heats, later this week.
