UUP officers defect to Conservatives

Two Ulster Unionist Officers in north Down have defected to the Northern Ireland Conservative Party.

Membership officer Frank Shivers and the party's association treasurer Mark Brotherson have both left the UUP.

Mr Shivers said he felt he had made the right move.

He said it was a "good move away from the tribal politics we have in Northern Ireland to a more mainstream political environment."

He said he made the decision after seeing the plans the Tories have for the future.
