Firefighters evacuate part of Bass Buildings in Belfast

Firefighters at Bass Buildings in Alfred Street Firefighters were called to deal with a blaze at the Bass Buildings in Alfred Street in Belfast city centre

Thirteen people had to be led to safety by firefighters evacuating part of an apartment block in Belfast city centre.

One woman was brought down on a ladder from a first-floor flat in the Bass Buildings in Alfred Street on Sunday.

A number of people were treated at the scene for the effects of breathing in smoke. They have since returned home.

Fire Service Area Commander Alan Walmsley said the flat was well alight when they arrived at about 15:30 BST, sending smoke throughout the building.

"We advised people to stay in their flats until they could be rescued," he said.

"It could have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for the quick response of the Fire Service."
