A man has been remanded in custody charged with the attempted abduction of a child in Belfast.

Shidul Islam, 43, was arrested following an alleged incident in the east of the city on Tuesday.

He is accused of trying to take at least one child from an area near his home address in Gotha Street.

Mr Islam, a Bangladeshi national, spoke through an interpreter at Belfast Magistrates' Court to confirm he understood the charge.

A police constable said she could connect him with the alleged offence.

Defence solicitor Pearse MacDermott told the court his client was not seeking bail at this stage.

Mr Islam was remanded in custody to appear again by video-link next week.
