Road sign spelling sparks debate

Campsey road sign

Campsie or Campsey, that's the question currently puzzling some people in the north west.

Road signs along the newly opened A2 Maydown dual carriageway carry both spellings, but it's unclear which is correct.

Former Sinn Fein MLA and local historian, Francie Brolly, said either spelling is acceptable.

"Both are an English rendering of a Gaelic name, so it's irrelevant which way it is spelled," he said.

The Ordnance Survey uses the spelling 'Campsey', but some signs in the area, including one pointing to the local industrial estate, use 'Campsie'.
