Spotlight Iris Robinson documentary wins two RTS awards

BBC Northern Ireland's current affairs programme Spotlight has won two prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) journalism awards.

Spotlight's Darragh MacIntyre won in the Scoop of the Year category for the Iris Robinson Investigation.

The programme also picked up the Nations and Regions Current Affairs and News event.

The documentary attracted worldwide coverage following its revelations about the first minister's wife.

The award's were announced at a ceremony in London on Wednesday night.

Peter Johnston, Director of BBC Northern Ireland said: "This is a fantastic win for our Spotlight team - particularly with a Northern Ireland story winning in the UK-wide Scoop of the year category - and comes hot on the heels of the success at the Irish Film and Television Awards earlier this month."

"Painstaking investigation"

Head of Television Current Affairs, BBC NI, Jeremy Adams, described it as a "tremendous achievement" to be recognised by the Royal Television Society.

"The team put a great deal of time and dedication into what was a painstaking investigation and also one of the most important and talked about television investigations of the past year."

Earlier this month, Spotlight's investigation of Iris Robinson picked up an award at the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards (IFTA).

Spotlight's Darragh MacIntyre won in the Current Affairs category for Spotlight: The Iris Robinson Investigation which was first broadcast in January 2010.

The programme has also been awarded three CIPR awards for Scoop of the year, Current Affairs Programme of the Year and News & Current Affairs Broadcaster of the Year for reporter Darragh MacIntyre.
