A man has appeared in court charged with indecently assaulting a boy.

The 62-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of committing the offence in west Belfast between 1998 and 2000.

His alleged victim was aged between five and seven at the time.

The accused spoke only to confirm he understood the charge during an appearance at Belfast Magistrates' Court. He was remanded in custody.

With police investigations continuing, a Public Prosecution Service representative predicted it would be a "very substantial" case.

The man made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to appear again via video-link next month.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall imposed reporting restrictions after being told that naming him could lead to the alleged victim being identified.
