MP says new measures needed to combat knife-crime

Gregory Campbell has called on the justice minister to consider new measures to tackle knife-crime.

The East Londonderry MP wrote to Justice Minister David Ford on Tuesday following two stabbings, one fatal, in Castledawson and Omagh.

He said the two incidents highlighted the need to introduce additional measures to reduce knife crime.

Mr Campbell asked Mr Ford to look at the ownership of knives, "to deter this type of murderous activity".

Early on Sunday morning, a woman was stabbed in the head as she answered her front door in the Cappagh Villas area of Omagh.

She had recently moved to the area and was hosting a house-warming party. She is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Twenty-four-year-old Michael McLaughlin was stabbed to death at a flat on the Hillhead Road in Castledawson on Sunday night.
