York's new athletic stadium is under way

Work has started on a new £2m, eight-lane, community athletics stadium at the University of York.

The facility is to have a pavilion and covered seating for 500 spectators, City of York Council said.

It will be used by students and 600 members of City of York Athletic Club which is leaving its base at Huntington Stadium for the new venue.

The stadium at the Heslington West campus is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

John Bennett, of contractor Thornton Sports Ltd, said: "We are sure that the new facility will help to produce future medal winners."

The venue has been funded by the council and university.
