Medical unit at St Helen's Square in York to help weekend drunks

A medical unit is opening in York at weekends and on race days to help people who have drunk too much alcohol.

The community medical unit staffed by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service will operate at St Helen's Square on Friday and Saturday nights.

The centre will also operate when there are race meetings at the Knavesmire.

Volunteers from the Street Angels will also offer help. It is hoped the unit will cut pressure on York Hospital's emergency department.

The unit is expected to operate from early evening until about 03:00.
