Firefighters were called to a blaze at their own training centre when an exercise apparently went wrong.
Staff noticed smoke coming from the centre in Easingwold, near York, at 16:00 BST on Thursday.
Four crews attended the fire, which destroyed the roof of the building. Nobody was hurt.
Group manager Carl Boasman said: "We've been doing this every day for 10 years and this is the first time the building's caught fire."
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, which started after a training course had finished.
About 12 trainee firefighters were being trained at the centre but nobody was inside the building at the time of the blaze, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
Crews from York, Huntington, Acomb and Easingwold brought the blaze under control by 17:00 BST.
