Gate Helmsley crash deaths accused appears in court

A man has appeared in court charged with causing the deaths of an elderly couple the day after they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Dennis Green, 81 and his wife Doreen, 80, died in the two-vehicle smash at Gate Helmsley, near York last April.

Robert Verity, 25, of Middlecroft Drive, Strensall, York, appeared before Scarborough magistrates charged with causing death by careless driving.

He was bailed and is due to appear at York Crown Court on 14 February.

A statement from the family at the time of their deaths described the couple as "treasured and much loved parents, grandparents and great-grandparents".

The family said: "They had celebrated 60 years of marriage the day before, and a family party had been planned for the weekend.

"They had a wonderful and happy marriage and we draw some small comfort from the fact that they are still together."
