York city centre gets makeover scheme

The centre of York is to get new lighting and seating as part of a £200,000 makeover.

The area around Petersgate and Colliergate will receive new seating which City of York Council said would "aid and support older and disabled people and wheelchair users".

New LED lighting which mimics natural sunlight will also be installed.

The council said the project was part of a larger £3.3m initiative called Reinvigorate York.

Work will start next week and is expected to be completed by the end of March.

According to the council the new lighting will reduce light pollution and "provide clearer and more easily identifiable coverage for York's CCTV camera network".

Councillor Dave Merrett, cabinet member for transport, planning and sustainability, said: "Reinvigorate York will provide a lasting legacy, enhancing the public realm and supporting city centre retailers and attractions.

"These works are just a few of the projects currently taking place in the city centre to improve and enhance the quality of the city's public spaces."
