North Yorkshire braced for further snowfall

Snow covered many parts of the county on Friday

An amber weather warning has been issued for parts of North Yorkshire, with up to 10cm (4in) of snow expected to fall overnight.

A Met Office spokesman said Friday's snow showers would continue into Saturday, with most of it falling away from the coastline and on hills.

He said there was a risk of significant travel disruption through Friday night and the first part of Saturday.

Ten schools in North Yorkshire closed early on Friday as a precaution.

Martin Horner, City of York Council's head of engineering, said gritters would be out in the city in the early hours of Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said difficult weather conditions posed problems for their crews.

A spokesman said: "When temperatures plummet and snow and ice are on the ground, they traditionally see a marked increase in patients with breathing difficulties, weather-related incidents [such as] slips, trips and falls and road traffic collisions - all of which put additional pressure on their service.

"We have plans in place to help us ensure we can continue to operate in the adverse conditions but [we] ask that the public also make their own plans to ensure they don't need to call us unnecessarily for assistance."
