Tadcaster bridge re-opens after floods forced closure

A bridge over the River Wharfe at Tadcaster re-opened on Sunday

A bridge closed because of flooding, dividing a town, has re-opened.

The bridge in Tadcaster was inspected by engineers at the council and was re-opened to traffic on Sunday afternoon.

The Environment Agency said it was emptying a number of flood storage areas in Linton, Clifton and Wistow as river levels fell.

Seven flood warnings remain in place in the area, including the River Ouse and the River Wharfe. Police said a number of roads remained closed.

North Yorkshire Police repeated warnings to people not to ignore road closure signs, after a woman was rescued from her car when she tried to drive through floodwaters on a road in Naburn, near York, on Saturday.

The A659 bridge over the River Wharfe, which is used as a busy thoroughfare connecting two halves of Tadcaster, was closed last Wednesday as a safety precaution.

A swing bridge in Cawood remains closed, as does Thornton Bridge in Helperby, while a bridge at Boroughbridge has re-opened.
