Easingwold stabbing victim's widow due to give birth

The wife of a man stabbed to death in a possible racist attack in North Yorkshire is due to give birth, his family have revealed.

Mohammed Saleem Khan, 36, from Luton, was in a van which crashed on Long Street, Easingwold, on Sunday. It was later found he had been stabbed.

Police said a knife found at the scene was being examined. A fifth person has been arrested over the death.

In a statement, Mr Khan's family, who call him Saleem, called for justice.

They said: "Following our tragic loss of Saleem, his family and wife, who is due to give birth, want to see justice for his murder.

"We want those responsible to be imprisoned and we appeal to the courts for this to happen.

"The family thanks North Yorkshire Police for their ongoing efforts with the investigation and the support they have provided to us at this very difficult time."

Suspicious objects

North Yorkshire Police said a 23-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and was in custody.

The force is continuing to question a 26-year-old man held on suspicion of murder.

A 20-year-old woman and two men, aged 21 and 25, arrested in the early hours of Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender, have been released on bail while inquiries continue.

Police said previously they had received information that suggested there may have been a racist element to the attack.

Det Ch Insp Heather Pearson said: "Although a weapon has been recovered, we still need to establish whether this was used in the murder of Mr Khan.

"Therefore, I would urge people in Easingwold to remain vigilant and contact the police or Crimestoppers if they see any suspicious objects."

Police also want to speak to anyone who saw a white Europcar Ford Transit van in the area between 19:00 BST on Saturday and 07:00 BST on Sunday.
