HGV driver killed in A1 crash in North Yorkshire

The driver of the HGV carrying bottled gas was pronounced dead at the scene

A man has died in a crash on the A1 in North Yorkshire involving three heavy goods vehicles.

The 38-year-old, from Stockton-on-Tees, was driving a HGV carrying bottled gas when it collided with a second parked HGV at about 02:00 BST, police said.

His vehicle was then struck by a third HGV. The 58-year-old driver of the third vehicle, from North Lincolnshire, is in a critical but stable condition.

The A1 northbound, south of Catterick, was closed for more than 17 hours.

The 58-year-old man is being treated at Darlington's Memorial Hospital.

North Yorkshire Police said no-one else was injured in the crash.

The Highways Agency said the road had needed emergency resurfacing because of a corrosive spillage from one of the vehicles involved in the crash.
