Bedale bypass road approved by North Yorkshire council

Plans for a £42m bypass at Bedale in North Yorkshire have been approved by the county council.

The project will take the main A684 road out of Bedale along a new three-mile (4.8km) road.

The council will pay about £6m of the £42m cost of the road but said it would drop the project if costs rose substantially.

Work on the bypass is expected to begin in 2014 and is due to take two years to construct.

It will also bypass Aiskew and Leeming Bar.

The council decided to fund the scheme after the government indicated it would only pay about £36m towards construction.
