Motorcyclist killed in Cock o' the North race crash named by police

A motorcyclist killed during an annual motorbike race in Scarborough has been named.

Steven Denis Hix, 38, from Holbeach near Spalding, Lincolnshire crashed in front of hundreds of spectators during the Cock o' the North competition.

North Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident, which happened at Oliver's Mount at about 18:00 BST on Sunday.

Mr Hix's father, Denis, described his son as "a kind and loving family man".

The Oliver's Mount race circuit hosts four weekends of motorcycle road racing each year, including the two-day Cock o' the North competition each July.

Police said Mr Hix lost control of his bike at the bottom straight of the 2.4-mile (3.9km) race circuit before crashing into a field.

North Yorkshire Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the accident.

In a family statement Mr Hix's father, Denis, said: "Steve was an accomplished and experienced racer with a passion for the sport and many wins at all levels to his credit.

"On track, he was well known for being a hard charger and fiercely competitive. Off track, a kind and loving family man."
