North Yorkshire men killed in avalanche brought home

The men were part of a group attempting to reach the summit of Mont Blanc

The bodies of two British climbers killed in an avalanche in the French Alps are to be returned to the UK on Tuesday, police have said.

John Taylor, 48, and Steve Barber, 47, from Upper Poppleton, near York, were among nine people who died on Mont Maudit, near Chamonix, on Thursday.

The men were fathers of young children and lived in the same street.

A third Briton, Roger Payne, 55, originally from London, was also killed in the avalanche.

The three men had been part of a 28-strong group traversing Mont Maudit before dawn in an attempt to reach the summit of Mont Blanc.

Mr Barber and Mr Taylor had been raising funds for St Leonard's Hospice in York.
