Plans for a £9m sports facility at the University of York have been approved.
Work on York Sports Village, which will feature a 25m pool, 100 station gym, astroturf pitch and five-a-side pitches, is due to start this Spring.
City of York Council approved the plans as part of a £750m expansion at Heslington East campus.
It is hoped the facilities, which are planned to open in July 2012 to the university and public, will create up to 30 new jobs.
Professor Brian Cantor, vice-chancellor of the university, said: "We already provide excellent sports and recreational facilities for students, staff and the community, but York Sports Village will take them to a new level."
Plans for a second phase of the sports village include additional grass pitches, floor space for classes and a cafeteria.
York Sports Village is part of a £750m campus expansion of which new accommodation for the Computer Science, Theatre, Film and Television, and Law and Management departments opened in October.
The university said the completed extension could result in a 50% increase in student numbers to about 16,000.
