Swindon cyclist stabbed to death in 'vicious' attack

Scene of death Police described the scene as "horrendous"

A cyclist found repeatedly stabbed to death on a path in Swindon was killed in "an extremely vicious attack", police have said.

The man, aged in his 60s, was discovered shortly before midnight on Thursday on a path which runs from the town centre to the Rodbourne area.

Wiltshire Police are yet to find the weapon, or weapons, used.

Det Ch Insp Sean Memory, who is leading the murder investigation, believes the attacker was unknown to the victim.

"I'm convinced someone knows who is responsible. It is likely they may have had blood on their clothing or received an injury during the attack and could be acting suspiciously either last evening or today," he said.

The police believe they have identified the victim but are trying to trace his next of kin.

'Stood no chance'

The force added the man may have been cycling home as his bike was found nearby.

The path, which begins close to Swindon railway station and runs to the Oasis leisure centre, remains closed while police carry out forensic tests.

According to Mr Memory, the victim stood no chance.

"[It's going to be a] really difficult investigation going forward. I'm really appealing for the public's help," he said.

Wiltshire Police also warned members of the public to remain vigilant and take their personal safety seriously.

Supt Andrew Carr advised people to avoid walking home alone at night, only use well-lit routes and to contact the police they saw anything suspicious.

"Don't put yourself or others in potentially dangerous situations and be aware of what or who is around you," he said.
