A police car has been involved in a crash on the M4 in Wiltshire.

The crash happened on the westbound carriageway between junction 16 for Swindon and junction 17 for Chippenham at about 10:45 GMT.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said the force vehicle had been stationary on the hard shoulder when it was hit by an Audi A3.

A police officer, a man and a child were taken to hospital, but there were no serious injuries.

The Highways Agency said two lanes had been closed to traffic but the road had now fully reopened.

The police spokesman said: "A police officer was extracted from the vehicle by the fire service and taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon via land ambulance with shoulder injuries.

"It is expected that he will be released from hospital later today.

"The male driver of the Audi and a child passenger were also taken to hospital as a precaution."
