Man who attacked mother with hammer faces jail sentence

A man from Bristol who attacked his 79-year-old mother with a hammer had warned a mental health worker he was going to kill her, a court was told.

Andrew Deans, 40, pleaded guilty at Bristol Crown Court harm to causing grievous bodily harm.

The court heard he was sent home after an assessment by doctors, who said he did not have a mental disorder which warranted detention.

His mother suffered serious head injuries in the attack in February.

A spokesman for Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership said: "As the court case is not complete, we cannot comment on this case.

"However, individuals can only be detained under the Mental Health Act if they meet the strict legal criteria which clinicians must observe."

The judge told Deans he could face up to 12 years in prison when he is sentenced on Tuesday.
